Tobacco can be used for many different things like pesticide, medicine, entheogen's (a psychoactive substance used in a religious, shamanic or spiritual context). It also may be consumed in many different forms, like smoking, chewing, dipping, snuffing or snus. In North America, it quickly became popular as a trade item and a recreational drug.

Tobacco is cultivated like many other agricultural products. The seeds are sown in cold frames or hotbeds to prevent insect attacks, then it is transplanted into fields. Tobacco is an annual crop, typically harvested mechanically or by hand. After harvesting, tobacco is stored for curing, allowing for oxidation and degradation of carotenoids. This allows the tobacco to take on properties that are attributed to how smooth the tobacco is.

There are a number of types of tobacco, some include:

Aromatic Fire-Cured Tobacco - cured by smoke from open fire. In the US, it is grown in middle Tennessee, Virginia and Central Kentucky. Fire Cured tobacco grown in KY and TN are used in chewing tobacco's, cigarettes, condiments in pipe tobacco blends and moist snuff. Another type of fire-cured tobacco is Latakia, produced from oriental varieties of N. Tabacum. After curing, the tobacco is smoked over fires of hardwoods and aromatics shrubs in Cyprus and Syria.

Cavendish Tobacco - considered a type of tobacco, but really it is referred to the process of curing and the method of cutting the tobacco. Specific processing and cutting contribute to bringing out the natural sweet taste of tobacco. Cavendish can be produced from any type of tobacco, but usually it is created out of a blend of Kentucky, burley and Virginian tobacco. This type is most commonly used in pipe tobacco and cigars.

Turkish Tobacco - is sun-cured, small leafed and highly aromatic. This type is grown in various regions such as Turkey, Greece, Macedonia and Bulgaria. Turkish tobacco is also known as "oriental" tobacco. Today, its main use is blended for pipe tobacco and cigarettes.

Perique Tobacco - this tobacco is produced by turning standard tobacco into Perique through the technique of pressure-fermentation. Considered to be the "truffle" of pipe tobaccos, it is blended with many different pipe tobacco's, but it is to strong to be smoked pure. In its early days Perique was also chewed, but no longer is. Generally, it is now blended with pure Virginia to offer spice, coolness and strength to the blend.

Shade Tobacco - grown and cultivated in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Early colonist learned smoking tobacco in pipes and began to cultivate the plant commercially.
